This is a bronze sculpture, an antique model of a Marly horse and groom, after the original marble statues by Guillaume Cousto
The work depicts a rearing horse being restrained by a semi-clad attendant.
Crozatier was born to poor parents, his family settled in Aiguilhe where he was raised from 1795 to 1813.
He entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Pierre Cartellier. He stayed in Italy from where he brought back a quantity of casts after the great masters of sculpture of the Renaissance and Baroque art which he would use to compose bronze art objects.
This production attracted important princely, royal and imperial commissions, in France and abroad.
He died on February 8, 1855, leaving a large part of his assets to his hometown of Puy-en-Velav.
Or the 340,000 francs bequeathed, 100,000 francs were allocated to the construction of a new Museum; a sum to which his widow added 26,000 francs.
He is buried in Paris at the Père-Lachaise cemetery, 49th division.
His tomb, decorated with a bust and a basket in Carrara marble, was made in the green porphyry of Ternuay by François-Joseph Varelle at the Pont de Miellin granite Joseph Varelle at the Pont de Miellin granite works in Servance (Haute-Saône).
Having discovered several processes for improving molds, he was called upon to cast monumental sculptures. In 1833, Crozatier was commissioned to cast the statue of Napoleon I by Charles Emile Seurre located at the top of the Vendôme column which was erected in the center of the eponymous square to commemorate the Battle of Austerlitz
This statue was replaced during the Second Empire by a statue of Napoleon I by Auguste Dumont.
