A large floor-standing carved and painted wooden Buddha

Qing/Republican

This is a Japanese gilt and lacquered wood figure of Amida Nyorai (Amitābha Buddha), likely from the Edo or Meiji period. 

The Buddha is seated in the lotus position with hands joined in the dhyana mudra(meditation gesture). 

The figure sits on a lotus pedestal, which is a classic representation in Japanese Buddhist art. 

The elaborate, flame-shaped mandorla (halo) behind the figure is carved with scrolling lotus designs. 

Amida Nyorai is the Buddha of Limitless Light, who presides over the Western Pure Land paradise.
