This item is a magnificent late 19th-century French figural mantel clock mounted on a figured specimen marble base.
Key Details & Features:
The sculptural group depicts "Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss", faithfully modeled after the celebrated neoclassical masterpiece by the Italian sculptor Antonio Canova (originally carved in 1787 and housed in the Musée du Louvre). It captures the dramatic mythological moment when Cupid (Eros) awakens the lifeless Psyche with a tender touch and embrace.
The Clock Mechanism:
The internal movement has been carefully replaced by an accurate digital movement providing a convenient alternative to the mechanical movement However the original movement also comes with the clock and could be refitted if wished.
Integrated into the naturalistic rock-work base below the figures is the clock face housing an 8-day mechanical movement by renowned French makers such as Japy Frères, featuring a white enamel dial with delicate painted details.
Materials & Craftsmanship:
The piece features finely chased and fire-gilt ormolu-style patination, resting upon a sweeping circular marble plinth fitted with decorative feet and a gallery plaque.
A stunning convergence of high-romantic neoclassical sculpture and fine horology, pieces of this scale and quality represent the best of 19th-century French decorative arts.
